Contract renewal coming up for Messi

Alerted by the reports about several European top clubs keeping an eye on the player (read more here and here), Barcelona will offer Messi a contract to reward him for his performances over the past year and making him in all aspects the key figure of the squad.

It is not expected that the duration of his current contract, that expires in 2014, will be changed. But the numbers will. Messi signed his last renewal at the end of the year 2005, including a buyout clause of 150 million euro°.

Well, even if Ronnie was to return to the team, (which still seems highly unlikely), there is little doubt that Messi has taken over as the "face" of this franchise. My only concern about any sort of long term contract is his injury prone track record. When he's healthy and 100% he is pure magic to watch. But now more than ever "we" need him out there for every game for the full 90 if need be. Can we count on him to be that dependable and durable? that is my only concern. As far as the money goes based on talent alone he's worth every penny!

After his last injury (leaving the pitch crying against Celtic...) all parties are now convinced that this is cannot be seen as coincidence anymore, so special programs and exercises are being developed to keep him as injury free as possible and Messi will follow all of it by the letter. Let's hope it will help.

Ok, I know I'm going to get crucified for this. And let me first state that I am one of Messi's biggest fans but consider the following possibility (just for arguments sake)....What if Abramovich offers Essien AND 70 million Euro for Messi? With that 70mil Euro Barca could potentialy sign both Alves AND Diego. Or maybe Diego and Huntelaar. Either way you now have filled 3 starting spots for the price of one! I LOVE Messi, but wouldn't a deal like this be too good to pass up? and I wouldn't put it past Abramovich to make such a "crazy" offer. I want to know what you guys think? comments anyone?
