Deco chooses Chelsea over Inter

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that Barcelona midfielder and Portugal international Deco (30) has decided to join English Premier League club Chelsea in the summer.

Deco's agent Jorge Mendes has been talking over the last weeks with Inter sports director Marco Branca and Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon. Deco himself would have talked several times with new Inter manager José Mourinho.

Because Chelsea made a better financial offer and because he would really become the key figure in the English team, Deco would now have chosen the Chelsea option. If nothing unexpected happen, Deco will soon sign his contract. At Chelsea the Brazilian born player could possibly team up again with current Portuguese national team coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.

British tabloid Mail on Sunday also claims that Deco is close to signing for Chelsea. The arrival of Deco would clear the way for Frank Lampard to leave Chelsea for Inter. Barcelona would receive a transfer fee of little less than 20 million euro°.

With all the respect for Deco as an excellent midfielder and his contribution to Barca's titles and wins in past years, I think that 20M € is an offer that cannot be refused for 31 y.o. player. Barca must turn to younger forces and build a foundation for next 5-6 years of elite european and domestic football. As for alternatives, for me, there are only 3 options (basically, only one since other two are unobtainable) - Fabregas, Anderson and Moutinho. I think that Fabregas is willing to come back to his home but not yet this season. If Arsenal doesn't win any trophy next season I think that he will leave for sure, given the number of players leaving Arsene Wenger's squad (Flamini, Adebayor, Hleb...). Anderson is tightly bound to SAF an Man Utd but however, possibilities should be explored. Joao Moutinho is relatively easy to lure to Camp Nou since Sporting doesn't belong to the Europe's top (no offense, Portugal). Of course, everything written stands only in case Deco leaves, which I believe he will, hopefully for mentioned 20M €. With new CMF an left winger our squad would be completed, except a good backup to Dani Alves. I suggest Carlos Diogo from relegated Zaragoza. He should be available for some less amount of money.

@Eye: Good post, I agree with your options, but would add this Modric dude to the list. Impressive little player, very similar to Moutinho imo.

Sport is posting the first article about Moutinho, I hoped that the rumours in some portuguese papers (Correia Manha, Ojogo some days ago) are true, and now even Sport and EMD seem to know/suggest something.
The portuguese papers said that he would be available for about 25 Mio., hopefully there is already an agreement with Sporting in case he continues to show some strong displays at the EURO.

I would be fine with 15 Mio. for Deco, add 10 Mio. and forward them directly to Sporting.

As for Dani's backup, Cortés would be a nice and cheap option. Wouldn't mind Diogo too, but it's a pity he has damaged his ligaments again... So I would go for the Getafe-player.

I'm comfortable with a 20mil Euro offer for Deco. I just wish Barcelona would have included Eto'o and possibly Ronaldinho in a package deal along with Deco. Abramovich has the money and he's keen to deploy a more vibrant and entertaining team for next season. So what better to start than with these three players? I'd even offer him a slight discount for the three. Say, around 70mil? That would like getting Eto'o for 30mil and I don't see Milan offering up that much for him. Otherwise I'd ask for 35mil for Eto'o straight up. So he'd pocket the 5mil in return. I don't see any team, including Chelsea willing to spend 40mil on Eto'o. I just don't see it happening.

You really don't have to mention MOdric to me, after all, I am Croatian so I am aware of his qualities :). He is not any worse than Fabregas and his endurance is stunning - he is like an marathon runner converted to technical number 10 with vision and passing. Only problem with him is that Barca really missed his to Tottenham for not such high price (23M €) although he admitted that his dream is to play for Barca. Unlike all mentioned players is my previous post, Modric proved himself on national level leading Croatia trough all qualification games for Euro and he will also be one of the Euro stars.

Regardless, could anyone provide me about some info about that Cortes guy - is he worth wearing Barca's shirt, even as a squad player? Main characteristics, and so... I looked Carlos Diogo few times and was pleasentley surprised with speed, strength and crossing. He would be excellent sub to Dani Alves. I don't know why is Barca ignoring him. He would come for cheap and, remember, Real Madrid actually bought this guy - that's got to mean something.

As first, hello to Eye, I'm Croatian too...(Mi Hrvati :)). 20 mio for Deco is much more than I expected. It's a huge amount of money for the 30 yo player, and from selling Gudjohnsen and maybe Oleguer Barca could earn over 30 mio. It would be great to add some money and buy excellent pair Silva-Villa or Ben Arfa-Benzema. As I can hear Ben-Arfa is willing to go to PSG so Barca could lure him away from France. He's young and prosperous player, and most of all left winger. To resume, I don't want Hleb and/or Mancini. Don't buy B-quality players!

:) Nevjerovatno gdje sve nema Hrvata...

To all non-Croatian-speaking - sorry... :)
