Gudjohnsen could stay

Catalan sports paper Sport claims that Barcelona attacker and Iceland international Eidur Gudjohnsen (29) could in the end not leave the club this summer.

On the one hand no concrete offer has so far been made by another club, while on the other hand Gudjohnsen could be given more chances to play next season. Or that seems to have been the outcome of a meeting between the striker and new Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola a few days ago.

Guardiola thinks that Gudjohnsen, whose first option always has been to stay in barcelona, could have an important contribution during a long season, given his experience, his physical strength and his goalscoring abilities.

Goal scoring abilities...?? OMG... :-(

Not our best player, but still a nice versatile attacking player for the bench. He is happy to stay and sit on the bench because his contract at Barca is so much better than he would get anywhere else. So why not keep him!

he's only played a handful of games as a striker so to judge his goal scoring ability from midfield is unfair. if he is happy to stay, knowing he qwont get too many games then keep him as a backup striker.

He has good scoring abilities! don't you remember what he did to us in the champions (chelsea vs Bacelona) Gudjohnsen and joe Cole finished us... y is a very good finisher, the problem was that Rijkaard used him as a cm midfilder or left wing midfilder... Lets si if he can do what he did on chelsea on the past...

id say why not keep him on the bench, he does his job when he's out on the pitch, may not be the best job, but ive seen worse...let him stay cuz he is real loyal to us and i like that......but if he should go, i would be kinda happy haha

yes, if he is happy to stay knowing he h wont get as much playing time as possible..i think keep him. its long season.and we will need him sometimes. also he is hard working..and loyal to the club..so let him stay...

Exactly my point of view. A player with a winner mentality. He really wants to win something with barca, he doesnt mind to sit on the bench and i think he has a lot more to bring to the team actually. His efforts we're bad, but so was the rest of the team.

I'd keep him, unless his contract is weighing down the club, Gudjohnsen is quite competant as a striker, whilst not breaktakingly fast, he does read the offside trap well, and I think if he's allowed to be a super sub in attack, he probably will score a few vital goals and he does seem to be in the right positions at the right time, whether he can replicate it to the Larsson level, not sure.

I struggle to understand the thought process from some of you?! No one question's Guddy's "loyalty" and "desire" but where is his pride?! He cannot possibly be so naive not to expect that he will have a similar role with the club as he did last season - which is non existent!

He KNOWS he's not in Barca's plans, he knew as much last season! If he had any ounce of pride in himself he would go to a team tha IS going to value his talents and use them to their fullest abilities. Barcelona already knows the type of "quality" her brings to the club and they have made it known in no uncertain terms that it's not good enough to earn quality minutes at the club! Guddy needs to be a MAN and show some PRIDE for once! All this "loyalty" B.S. means absolutely NOTHING if the other party involved doesn't feel the same way!

according to the article guardiola does want him to stay, if thats so the club do want him for the reasons stated above.

cojonudo, I think his prode is to represent Barca. He wants to win something with Barca. Sometimes its better to be a part of world class team than to be at forefront in a second level team.

Indeed players want to play as much as possible. But I think Guddy knows his limitations as well. He knows that he wont get a hefty fee in most of the clubs, an wherever he goes, there are other younger strikers he has to fight with as well. So its better to sit in Barca bench than to sit in west ham bench or getafe bench.

Gudjohnsen has always served his clubs well, just not through scoring 25 goals every season, it is unrealistic to expect him to do that. What he does though in terms of passing and link up with other players in an unselfish manner is very much underestimated and he does score on a pretty regular basis given a chance. It is very immature to keep criticising him for not scoring a bunch of goals and only underlines the naysayers lack of understanding this game. His role in the dressing room is important as well being a hugely experienced player.
