Debate: The transfer summer

The summer transfer period came to an end on Monday at midnight. For Barcelona this is the result of the transfer activity over the past months:

IN
Seydou Keita
Gerard Piqué
José Manuel Pinto
Martín Cáceres
Daniel Alves
Alexander Hleb
Henrique Adriano Buss
Pedro
Víctor Sánchez

OUT
José Edmílson
Giovani dos Santos
Gianluca Zambrotta
Deco
Ronaldinho
Oleguer
Henrique Adriano Buss
Santiago Ezquerro
Lilian Thuram
Marc Crosas

Are you satisfied with the way the technical staff and the board have handled everything? Or are you already looking forward to the January transfer window?

I think they have wasted tir time looking for a centre forward which left them no time for the winger. A shame. Hope the damag won't be irreparable and we can pick up a winger in January.

Buy Angel Di Maria from Benfica in january. Maybe expensive but very young an exiting player.

I'm not satisfied.should have bought a new keeper, that can challenge Valdes, and hopefully relegate him to the bench.Should have also bought a left winger and sell Henry!!!for crying out loud...

Hopefully City will get Henry in the winter-market.

We already have some money left, so we should have no problem spending a bit on a guy for the LW and also keep the money of the Henry-deal for Benzema :P

I think they should have kept hold of Giovani Dos Santos, and used him as the replacement for Deco instead of buying Hleb. In the last league match of the previous season he was finally given the chance to play in the offensive midfield position(the Deco role) and ended up scoring 3 goals. Giovani was more or less "misused" in the left winger's position all of last season. As for the back line, we now have 6 central defenders; 4 is enough in my opinion. The transfer's of Pique and Henrique were unnecessary. They should also have sold Henry, and bought a prime left-winger; Silva, Ribery, Robinho or maybe Mutu as a left-sided striker? I like the transfers of Keita and Alves. As for the players sold; the only one I will miss is Giovani.

I just miss a LW. Otherwise I think they have done a terrific job.

~Well I have see the line-ups but would like a little adjustments. Henry needs to go! And then buy Angel Di Maria from Benfica in the next tansfer window to replace Henry. with those 3 forwards A. Di Maria, Eto'o, and Messi you can't miss all the goals that Henry and Gudjohnsen missed very happy that you sold Giovani dos Santos because he didnt to so good in Barcelona. Also I have seen the opponents get to many oppurtunities to shoot so i would reccomend a very excellent defensive mid-fileder 24 year old Javier Mascherano from Liverpool. This player will play with his heart for any club he plays for, running down defending even attacking, we need him in the next transfer window in January. Well Dani Alves in his first game of the La Liga did bad but not to worry. But the line-ups should be like this;

Alves----Puyol----Milito----Caceres

[~>Mascherano<~]
Xavi--/ \--Iniesta

Messi--------Eto'o[~>A. Di Maria<~]

Please buy [~>Di Maria<~], and [~>Mascherano<~].

Thank You,

They didn't buy someone to replace Deco. Deco was so important to our construction...

Transfers were really good this summer, only one thing remanis to be done, to find a tactic so they can understand each other on the pitch. Use someone like Hleb or Inesta as LW and swap Henry with Etoo as CF based on the opposition teams. So if Iniesta plays on the left wing there could be place for Keita in the midfield.

LW- Hleb to start most of the matches, and iniesta to be used as supper sub. or the otherwise again that decision must be taken by our manager as he has to prove he is good enough for Barca.
With pedro as third choice for LW.

Defence is the best based on the names since some many many years, although they will have to prove himself players like Pique or Caceras.

A second choice GK would be welcomed.

I know this is a debate topic but I am amused, (yet not surprised) to read how most of you feel that Laporta and the Board are basically a bunch of imcompetent space monkeys! Like you guys could have done better. Give me a break!

First of all Barcelona brought in arguably the best right back in the world, and one of the top transfer targets in ALL of football this summer in Alves. Alves is a definite upgrade over Zambrotta I think we can all pretty much agree with that.

Secondly Barcelona fortified their most pressing area on the club, defense, by bringing in an infusion of youth and fresh legs in Caceres and Pique. Unproven? yes! but better to get them now so as to incorporate them into the club rather than wait another year and "hope" they can be ready to immediately step in and contribute. Plus with Milito sidelined indefinitely it gives us more of an insurance policy at the position.

Keita and Hleb were brought in to solidify the midfield. Keep in mind Toure is coming off hernia surgery and that a tandem of Xavi/Iniesta in midfield simply hasn't worked out. Keita's versatility allows him to fill in for Toure if needed or play further up in midfield just behind Xavi. Keita also has a powerfull leg and can shoot from distance which is something that neither Xavi nor Iniesta are known for.

This allows Iniesta to come off the bench as a "super sub" which would be his ideal role for the club.

The addition of Hleb adds more versatility and options to the lineup. He is an unselfish player with a very good rate that will look to setup players like Messi, Henry and Eto'o in front of him. He can play in midfield or off the wing. While not much of a scoring threat you know that Hleb's going to give you 100% effort everytime he's out there on the pitch. And while he'll never be a fixture in the box scores, the "little" things he does on the pitch add up to a lot over the course of a season.

Sure Barcelona could have added another youthfull keeper and a "true" left winger but then that's like being upset and throwing a tantrum because you didn't get all the toys you wanted for Christmas.

I agree with most of you regarding selling Henry. I think Man City will carefully watch his games and I hope they'll get him in January. As I said few days ago and what I'm saying whole summer, there was no need to buy Keita, because Barca have Toure, for example, on the same spot. Hleb was also unnecessary buying, because Iniesta is much better on this position. Instead, Barca should've/could've chase Vd Vaart who was ready to join Barca and he'll be perfect replacement for Deco. Diego (Werder) will be another good buying. Now, if Barca sell Henry and Gudjohnsen in January, we could expect some better signing, maybe...
P.S. my view on transfer summer 1-10 will be 2,5

cojonudo Thanx...u saved me from the effort of typing, I agree with what u said completely!
Now for the complaining fans, I really wish them to sit with some real madrid fans and listen to them complaining, i am sure they will know then how lucky they are. Some people think its just that simple "we need this player...we get it!" I am so glad they didnt but "just any striker", they tried to get the one they believe in, it wasnt ment to be (beside, eto situation was not in their hand), for henry, I am one of those who screamed a lot "he is not a winger" but hey, dont let that blind u!we are talking about henry here!so I will give him another try, IN HIS POSITION "STRIKER".
For wingers, they tried!cant u c it?Ribery was impossible, Arshavine too expensive, and the others were not convincing for the technical staff, I respect that!I just love it!the team insisted not to make panic buys!now thats a team with style.
we have 4 CB+Milito, 4 of them can play in other positions beside being CB, so thats great depth, not an axcess of resources.
I am proud of the effort done by the board (regardless that stupid mess with vote of reproof), I hope it work for them as expected, or else lot of smart A**s will cause as headaches!

I totalle agree that we have sold world class players(for a bad price) and remplaced them with regular class. alves world class? so was zambrotta when he arrived.he is world class when he succeeds. there are too few players who really make the difference. Actually only messi can do it by himself. eto'o can score a lot of goals. so that's good but who else? messi is injured a lot. Henry is simply said annoying. he's lazy, always complaining. why sell ronnie and keep henry? the have almost the same pay check and ronnie had already proven himself. I also think we've bought too much defenders but the left back position is pretty week. hleb, keita are good but deco was better..

another thing I simply can not understand is not selling guddy?????? and selling ronnie, deco???

We needed a left wing and a tall centre forward. If you are going to take back the title(s) you need to spend and another 60 million euro for those 2 positions would have been nice.

Friends u need players with hunger!I remember that old deco (who improved a lot in barcelona by the way)and that rini 3 years ago, u can keep dreaming about them but they already ended their cycle in this team, thats a painfull fact in football, but it exist.

Again, gudi didnt find a team, his salary with barcelona will not be matched unless if he move to a major club, unlikely?then he have to stay for now, no other choice.

regarding winger and striker, even for 60M u would not find the right winger and striker for the team, its as simple as that "there were no options available", for 60 M u get garanteed players, whom do u suggest?

I beg to differ with most of you!!! especially concerning Henry. for one it is unfortunate that no one and I mean no one seems to be blaming the real culprits (Xavi and Iniesta). The transfers were quite good; Keita showed last year playing for seville what a wonderful midfielder he can be.(especially supporting the offensive players), Dani Alves is world class, Hleb is as talented as any footballer in the world today (except for Ronnie). Having said all that, Barca needs to choose between Xavi and Iniesta. playing those two as talented as they are with Leo Messi on the right wing completely kills the ability of the world two most dangerous attackers. I cant tell how often I watch Barca games and see Henry and Samu make runs and dont receive the ball from the midfielders. If it does not change Barca will struggle. Let the statistics show that between 2004 and 2006 when we won the Champions league all the GOALS and ASSISTS came from two players Ronnie and Samu. Xavi and Iniesta can keep the ball for hours but they are not difference makers. replace Ronnie and Henry and Eto'o will score a lot of goals

To the comment of losing world class players and replacing them with regular players consider that Ronaldinho and Deco were no longer playing at a world class level! They had lost their form at the club and became complacent living off their past glory. Sure Deco is playing well at Chelsea now, but that just shows you what a change of scenery, and a fresh start can do for you. Deco certainly wouldn't be playing with the same "enthusiasm" had he remained at Barcelona. Quite the opposite, he would have continued to sulk and been a shadow of his former self.

As far as the perception of Henry bitching and whining put yourself in HIS shoes for a minute! He is not some unproven arrogant scrub making demands and playing with a chip on his shoulder and a sense of entitlement having proven absolutely nothing! Henry IS a legend of the game! And as such he deserves respect! And if he complains here or there he has EARNED that right to do so!

How would YOU feel if you were considered one of the greatest strikers of not only our era but of all time and were relegated to giving up your position on the pitch to another player? I don't it would sit too well would it? Every great player has a sense of pride and Henry's no different.

Sure he's far from the player he once was, but we should have been smart enough to assume that the day he joined the club! And even if by his standards he had less than a stellar campaign last season, I can assure you that 90% of the players out there would have given an arm and a leg to post similar numbers for once in their lifetime!

As has been said before, if Barcelona aren't willing to utilize Henry in the best way possible in order to maximize his talents they should sell him. But to sell him making the simple argument that he's "too slow, lazy, uninterested, etc." is purely ridiculous!

for the money they spent i think they have done well. we have a really deep squad that is capable of covering all the injuries that we seem so susceptable to. the players they sold ALL needed to go, we could not have carried on with the dressing room we had.

if ade and silva had come out straight away and said that there was no chance of signing them then we may have found other options, which even then they tried to so to blame them isn't really fair. imagine if we had got ade and silva, no one would be complaining.

saying that i do think that investing in a LW in january would be a good idea, also an aternative no 9. as i've said before the depth of the squad was a success but the lack of alternative and options was a failure, partly their own, partly circumstances. alves and keita will prove good signings i think, for me pique was the best signing due to cost/potential. they do need another keeper but they dont need to panick buy, choose carefully and buy well, which is pretty much what they have done this summer.

I'm still not happy since we don't have a good left back, or a pure left winger. Also we missed out on very important players like Hernanes, Thiago Neves, David Silva Etc. Hope we will make 2 solid signings in January, if it was my choice I would take Clichy and Diego Capel.

i think barca should bought a new keeper, and left winger(my choice Robinho)....i think Valdez is a big hole, and we need to buy a new keeper as fast as we can(world class keeper like Cech...),maybe in winter market.i also think that we need a new left defender, abidal is not player he use to be in Lyon.

Anonymous said...

They really should have kept Ronaldinho. He and Messi are irreplacable

Anonymous said...

i am not satisfied enough
the players that we sold are almost better than we buy.

whole barcelona company made a great job because they are buying young players, like alves, caceres, pique... and they must give them a chance.

we need to form a right style of formation (4-4-3 is our best fomration, maybe we should try to play something else).

i hope so barcelona will take this primera trophy, because we are hungry :)

gretzz!

I'm not satisfied (that's what she said). We need to get somebody to replace Abidal's punk ass, that guy is awful.

Anonymous said...

i like the way they worked at the market but they should not have sold dos santos.he was just 20 years and we need a left back like we had van bronkhorst.we should sell henry and guddy and buy someone like di maria.and we need a playmaker at the midfield like fabregas.

Anonymous said...

team like barca should have 18 worldclass players all ready to play at the top level.(2 keepers, 6 defenders(3 wing-backs,3 centre backs),5 mi-fielders,5 forwards.

currently we have only one good keeper(valdes),2 wing-backs(abidal and alves),4 centre backs,5 midfielders and 4 forwards(bojan, henry, messi, eto)

so i ask my fellow barca supporters to suggest names of 3 players we shall buy in january transfer window

(1 young golie to challenge valdes)
(1 young left wing back to challenge and replace abidal)
(1 ofcourse winger esp left winger)
