British tabloid The Daily Star claims that Manchester United have made Barcelona attacking midfielder and Spanish international Xavi (28) their top transfer target.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson considers the Catalan player to be the perfect replacement for Paul Scholes, whose career at the club is coming to an end. With major doubts over the future of Owen Hargreaves as well, United needs to start moving to sign an experienced central midfielder.
With Xavi, whose contract expires in 2010, still in talks with Barcelona on a contract renewal (read more here), the English Premier League club will wait to see whether the contract situation is resolved before making a concrete move. Manchester United could make a bid of 25 million euro°.
Xavi’s agent Iván Corretja is quoted by the tabloid as admitting the difficult renewal negotiations: "We have not been able to solve the situation at Barcelona, despite some months of negotiations. We feel he should be offered a deal which reflects his performances on the pitch. Everybody at Barcelona knows that there are some big European clubs interested in Xavi, particularly in England at the moment, and we will not allow this to go on forever."

If he won't accept the contract renewal I wouldn't mind selling him. After all no player are bigger then the club, not even Xavi.
But 25 million is not enough. He have 2 years left so we don't need to sell. He is one of the best midfielders in the world right now and it is also January. At least 35+ would be a reasonable price. For that kind of money we could sign Fabregas.
I'm very dissapointed with Xavi's behavior, he is a great and vital player for our team but i think his demands are way too excessive.
Xavi is barca.. but if he want to go in MU ok.. afterall Cesc is here to replace him, the future of FCB!!
I don't think we have to worry yet. It's just Xavi's agent posturing. Once word gets back to Xavi that he's not going to get more than a 7 million offer from Barca he's going to accept or fire his agent. I don't think he has any intention of leaving.
However, in 3-4 months this isn't resolved. And Xavi really will consider leaving. Then I wouldn't mind selling him if the price is right. Xavi is my favorite player, and I think he deserves to be paid handsomely, but I don't think 9 million per season is a good investment for the club. Maybe they could work out a compromise with incentives, but whatever the case both club finances and the happiness of the player have to be taken into account.

we'll come to an agreement with Xavi in due time, and i expect neither he nor the club are in any uproar over the salary back-and-forth.
any Barca fan who even talks about selling Xavi, especially now, doesn't know a whole hell of a lot about football. especially if you couple that with signing Fabregas to replace him. there is no comparison between the 2 players. Xavi is unquestionably the superior, and is the heart of our system. removing him totally changes the way we would have to play. furthermore, the price (€25m) is a joke. Xavi was the Player of the Tournament in 2008 a mere few months ago; the engine that led Spain to win that competition. he's also, as i've stated, an integral part of the club he's been at his entire life. imagine Del Piero or Francesco Totti leading Italy to a World Cup win and us offering €25m for them. we'd be laughed out of the room, as United should be in this case.
i'm not the slightest bit worried about this report. Xavi's not going anywhere, and we shouldn't consider letting him go. both sides want him to retire in Barcelona. fans need to be patient and have some faith.

After all, Xavi is one of the best players in Barcelona, he was also the best player at EURO so he probably feels a little frustrated to get less money than Henry who plays nothing. Besides, the difference between what he asks and what he is offered is not that big and I thing Barça could afford to play him 9 million / year.
yea barca can pay. but the difference between barca now and barca 10 years ago is that they take finance more seriously and dont want to go bankrupt. its a fine line between rich and poor in football.
