Do we buy? Fabregas.

In the previous two parts we discussed the needs of the club in the back, to strengthen the goalkeeper position and the defense.

In brief, what I recommended was to buy new young Goalkeeper as a back up, and either a player who can play both as a left back and a right back (Maicon standard), or a player who can play on the left flank as a left fullback and as a left wing so he gets enough time to play without making our defense more crowded with players than needed. All that incase we managed to have enough space in our squad, loaning or selling some players. The comments there offered some other opinions and it’s all noted and appreciated.

Now, after some delay, since last year, I move to the midfield wondering, do we buy?

For a change and instead of listing names I will reserve most of the space to discuss the hottest transfer prospect – fulfilling a promise I made before- Cesc Fabregas.

Why to buy him?

I will keep this part for those who recommend buying the guy to give good reasons to buy a talented player like Cesc. Beside, he plays in the premiership, where Beckham was promoted to the world once as the best football player, and now Rooney is labeled as the best striker. It will take less effort to promote a much more talented player like Cesc then; they have done so describing his potentials sometimes reasonably and sometimes not. So instead of echoing that, I will take a less popular role – nothing new about that, right?- I will mention why I think we need to think twice before showing the green light and money.

Why NOT?

I don’t think anyone can argue the player’s talent, he is one of the best in his position, but till someone tell what he can add to the squad that we don’t already have, I see no reason to break the bank buying him, so the right question to ask in my opinion, what will he add?

Possession:

He is a good ball distributer, but lets make it clear, he is not a Xavi, neither a Xavi heir by any mean, Fabri has the passing skills of a typical Masia graduate (something like MIT graduates in IT), some countries are known in football by their dribbling skills, others by their tactical discipline, and so on…Spain is well known by ball distribution skills in football, Catalans are an upgraded version of that, so Fabri is a “Masia” brand, while Xavi is a “Masia++” the closest to that Quality is Iniesta, call his model as “Masia+” if you like. So we already have Xavi successor, or at least one of them, because till Xavi retire, God knows how many Xavis that academy will pump in the first team veins.

Tactical structure:

There is no way we switch our structure to 4-1-3-2 shrinking our offense fluidity and divorcing our life time tactical structure (4-3-3) just to satisfy a player-any player. We are doing really good with the current structure in midfield (a beast, a horse and a maestro), the formula is clicking perfectly with a defensive midfielder to create a solid platform to break down counters defensively, and making the offense feel secured to push forward with no worries, then you have the magician –Xavi orchestrating the game, while the horse play a Box-to-box role serving everyone and handling special tactical commands for pep, do we really need to change something that works that good? Because Cesc is definitely not a Defensive midfielder, and will no way take Xavi role, beside he is a star so…don’t expect him to accept being the horse after he got used to be treated as a master.

Scoring:

I thought of more detailed stat, and it’s available, but to make things straight forward, Cesc in his best season –last season- scored seven goals in 32 games in the premiership, this season Our third midfielder Combination scored six goals till now. Now comparing to the scoring rate variation of players moving from the premiership to La Liga (Owen, Bekham, Henry….), and for the players moving in the opposite way like Torres, you can get a more realistic comparison, Keeping in mind that aside that great season, Cesc in his other six seasons scored eight goals all together.
But what’s more important than numbers is the fact that you can barely expect that Cesc will penetrate to Villarreal Box heading the ball to score a goal, Keita Style. And that kind of goals-by head- is crucial for us against a team with two rows or defenders.

Galacticos’ curse:

It always worries me to have lot of Giorgio Armani ties, Marc Jacobs Eyeglasses and Florsheim or Forzieri shoes in the midfield. Historically that fashion show is always an event to hail at the beginning of the season, and curse at the end. In midfield of three, one artist is more than enough while the others need to be addicted to eat mud and sweat till they smell! Not a nice saying? As lot of facts in life!

I don’t want to live that Deco thought anymore “Why the hell do I have to sweat earning back the ball, only to serve it to Roni?!” And guys I hate that you get as disappointed by the requested Fantastic three as you had been with the fantastic four…

Sending the right/wrong message to the future:

It has always been a concern, how to protect our youth academy from piracy? Lot of ideas were thrown into the hat and pulled out of it, aside of the pathetic new regulations lately made by UEFA which will make things worse I my opinion.

Our best shot is to promote the right message for our young players, leading by evidence and creating A Creed with the Techniques of Persuasion. The core of that Collective common outlook must give a clear answer for that inevitable question:
Where will a young player have a better opportunity to shine, with Barcelona or outside?

Message one:

Who is having a better opportunity?

Daniel Pacheco at Liverpool or Pedro/Bojan at Barcelona?

Fran Mérida at Arsenal or Busquets at Barcelona?

And while Iniesta is already hunting for titles with Barcelona Cesc is dispirit to earn his “new” team a place in premiership to qualify to the CL next season, and again where did pique get a better chance? with Barcelona or Man UTD?

We don’t need lot of commonsense to find the right answer when we avoid getting drifted by nonsense propaganda, but we need to pass that to our youth and encourage them to read facts rather than base their opinion on uncertain predictions. This cant be done if we buy Cesc, because then we will be sending the second message:

Message Two:

You, Thiago Alcántara and co! Instead of waiting at anonymous Barcelona Athletic an opportunity to be promoted to the first squad – something that may not happen at all- why don’t you take the first opportunity to move abroad and show your worth, if it clicked for you that’s perfect, if not, Barcelona will always have a 50 millions to spend getting you back, because being La Masia child means you will always be welcomed here with open arms.

The decision to buy or not to buy Cesc will automatically generate one of the two messages mentioned above.

Iniesta is lovable, Right Cesc?

This is a reasonable concern to rise, it seems like Iniesta has always been in Cesc path to get a better opportunity, with Barcelona and even on international level. Some people see competition as a motivation for continuous improving, but the majority have a more fragile ego, that when scratched it never heal, what kind of winners are you Cesc?

I am not so optimistic especially considering the fact that if Cesc join Barcelona, Iniesta will seal his place on the left wing. Pep had a very stressful time yelling at Iniesta – the wing- not to think as Iniesta the midfielder anymore “Andres! Don’t give a damn shit about how the team will earn back a lost ball on the edge of our box! Drop to the midfield but not deeper because you will squeeze us back this way and will make it more difficult and slower to move the earned ball forward!” The team-dedicated Iniesta needed time to accept not barking after the ball all over the field to win it back from the opponent as he used to do when he play as a midfielder, he just feel crazy when his team lose the ball and he gets obsessed to win it back. Now he understood that it’s better for the team to listen more to pep, and because the team is a priority for him he did so and he noticed that, following pep instructions, he actually became more effective when he receive the ball wide and make a run forward.

When pep demanded that, he knew he already have Yaya/Keita/Busq/Gudi/hleb behind and around Xavi to drop deeper. Yaya love doing that job, Busq will do anything to play, Gudi and keita enjoy serving the team anonymously, Hleb don’t even care how far his effort will be recognized as long as he will exchange jokes in the dressing room with pique, Cesc? Do you think Cesc “Prestige” will accept that? Especially that, he will play in that Bleak house, cursed role, doomed position, the third midfielder, where he is neither the ball distributor nor the opponent crusher. There, he will be the one who serve the team anonymously, as it is happening for Keita and Gudi so far. He runs and Iniesta get the praise –deservedly. I am not sure he will take that one nicely, what do you think?

Cost - benefit analysis:
It’s no less than “50 Millions” man! Now if we sign him I don’t think he will be a flop, but that’s not what makes the decision smart. He is a successful transfer only if he offers what worth the “50 Million”, boosting the team potentials to another level, if he will add as much as a successful 20 Million buy can offer then he is not a smart buy on the Cost/Benefit analysis, it will sound like saying Microsoft is a smart investment as long as it earn more than one dollar net profit. We already have players for that position who are scoring, defending, serving the team and increasing overall work rate even though they are not even in their best yet, taking the adaptation period in consideration, not satisfied? Then what about this: We have a string of young midfielders waiting for a chance in Barcelona Athletic, we have a string of left wing players there also which eventually may move Iniesta back to midfield, we have Busquets whom I expect to become much better than Cesc in two years from now at most, if he keep improving as I notice at the moment, and we have a “Crosas” in Scotland where he is hailed in the stadium “Crosas better than Cesc” they may not be serious at the moment but within two years who know?

Beside, there will be always cheaper and smarter targets, Hamsik for example is a difficult target but for 30 million Napoli will deliver it to your home, Yoann Gourcuff is a talented risky option –not as risky as the 50 million buy for me, Hernanes was elected as the most complete midfielder in Brazil recently, now is that only another promotion trick or he is really better than what we had seen in the Olympics, something I don’t know. I also prefer an Essien type of midfielders if buying a midfielder is a must.

Conclusion: Are we going to buy?

It’s not confirmed but it’s easy to believe that Laporta is seeking a big signing to end his reign in style, and it seems to be someone between Cesc and Kun. While Kun may seems to be a more attractive target for the majority of Barcelona fans at the moment, Laporta is aware that this will not be the case if Cesc end up signing for Real Madrid – and I believe this is the major factor that drive Barcelona fans crazy to sign the guy. If it happened and Cesc wore that colorless T-shirt, Laporta could be doomed for ever, while Kun transfer to the other side of the city seems to be more complicated. Laporta then has to be more aware of what Real Madrid does and plan his moves based on that – partially.

Laporta has a political future to think about, so I think there is a big possibility that Laporta will end up signing the guy, seeking guaranteed popularity, unlike me!

Do we buy? A Transfer Guideline.
Do We Buy? Goalkeeper.
Do We Buy? Defender.

Agree with a lot. What kan Cesc add to the squad? Keep Xavis shoes clean perhaps. Go for Kun! Xavis and Inestas pops up from La Masia all the time.

I think that Laporta won't be thinking about his future political career -- He will be thinking about the team. We don't need Cesc, and he won't sign him.

And I really don't see why is everyone talking about Cesc like he is the best player in the world? We've already got better players, we've got it all -- and we don't need him. Go sign for Real Madrid, I don't care.

Great read, Ramzi!

I think he could add something in five years time or so. Let his contract expire at Arsenal and pick him up for free (or a reduced fee with one year left) in 2012 or 2013.

another great read ,gratz ramzi

i agree with almost everything you say ,barcelona doesnt need cesc at the moment, and if he comes back with such a price alot of our youngsters are gonna leave the team and search for another team to shine,in order to come back later (if they can).

the only think i disagree is the conclusion, yes laporta has a political future to think about, but i think he will choose kun in the end, cause that is what barcelona needs, first of all he is a barcelona fan,and 2nd everyone in the world wants messi and kun in the same team,i mean its like when we wanted dani alves and when you see this year his partnership with messi oh my god.

fabregas costs allot, and we arent known as a huge spent buying club,if we sign kun with alot it will be because he is very diferent from what we have and will add to the squad.also kun will be a major asset for the future and we dont have any youngster to fill in upfront for the next 2-4 years(mauro icardi maybe then?or the lad eto brought ,forgot his name).on the other side when thiago will be ready in 1-2 years i bet he will be 5x fabregas.

conclusion we dont need fabregas, bring el kun to barca laporta !!!!!

congratz Ramzi !! I think we are good right now and we dont need Cesc.. He is the next Xavi but his time will come.. Now we have Gai, THIAGO Alcantra, Icardi.. and I agree to buy Aguero instead of Cesc.. Visca el Barca

In the drop down list one of the choices I listed is "Do we buy: Fabregas" while its actually "Do we buy?Defender" where it takes you if you give it "Go", Sorry for inconvenience.

skanjos, I think the guy you mean is: Olivier Moussima.

Thanx for your the opinions, always nice to exchange views and ideas.

Ramzi, dont worry mate your popularity is assured on this blog. I couldn't agree more with everything you had to say in this piece. I only want to highlight the points that made me smile :
1. The observation that players moving from La Liga to the Premier League invariably seem to me meet with success which only gives you an indication of the difference in standards b/w the 2 leagues.
2. The colourless t-shirt ~!

However, it seems from the comments above that readers have taken the impression that you are recommending a Kun transfer although I believe you are pointing out that we may be forced into it due to political compulsions. I think Kun is as unnecessary as a Fabregas transfer, right now or for the next few seasons. Joan Laporta has done more for Barca than any other Prez in recent times and Barca fans will always remember this. If even he has to resort to making some sort popular or sensational gesture then what hope can anyone have from politicians, governments, etc. I hope he desists from such actions.

According to the report, most of that debt comes from signings, which total €1,332,100,000, and it is no surprise to see Real Madrid at the top of the list.

The defending La Liga champions lead the way with a debt of €527,000,000, whilst close behind them are the capital's other major side, Atlético Madrid, with €430,000,000.

Behind those two come Barcelona, who have a debt of €388,000,000
i'm confused.
didn't we pay all our dept??
someone please tell me im wrong.

Good point hamad_ali!!!
Does anyone know more on this??????????????

I would welcome Cesc IF HE DOESNT RENEW and come on a free or very cheap a year to the end of his contract, thats the only way I would have him back. And saying Henry, Guddy etc dont score as much as they did in the EPL and Toress doing well in the EPL is nice but look at:

Forlan = Man-u flop
Sinama.P = Liverpool flop
Kanoute = Average @ WestHam & Spurs
Mendieta = Liverpool.

it depends on how you settle in.

But nice job still. Remember I said you(Ramz) and Xevin would still Manage Barca at some point, and you said until I become the club prez, I am working on that still.. lol..

Anonymous said...

I would welcome him back. Not for 50 mill though. If we could get him for maybe 20-25 and possibly 30max. Valdes Dani Puyol Pique Abidal Xavi Cesc Toure Messi Iniesta Etoo. 4-3-3 iniesta on the left. Henry will be gone in a few years. Why not bring cesc in at that point. Iniesta started his career as a foward. He can perform that role, as well as dropping into the midfield if xavi or cesc is injured or on the bench.

Tohar Investment Limited said...

he would definatelly be a good inclusion,by playing in the mildfield and we all know that pep now really prefers iniesta on the wing.so toure, xavi and cesc would be a very nice mildfield OR even busquet, xavi and cesc.very nice but henry would be one to suffer, and by next year when eto'o goes for the african cup,he would definatelly get his chances,BUT cesc would be tooooooo cost for that amount, may be in the region of 20-25 as BARCA4LIFE as stated.

One of the last Fiscal sheets discussed here:

http://www.fcbarcelona.com/web/english/noticies/club/temporada08-09/08/n080824102955.html

If you have a good accountants they can take things from here out it there, and there to here and "mhm...looks better now..."

One thing for sure is that we are in a solid Financial situation now as all the signs tell, debt is not a nightmare as long as its under control, sometimes in business you dont pay the debts because you feel better to invest the cash flow on a project that will offer you a better return that exceed the Dept interest you pay for delay, so its a win deal. While sometimes you take a different approach.

Led by Ferran Soriano and Marc Ingla (co- founders of Cluster Consulting -today DiamondCluster), the most successful home-grown consulting firm in Spain, the club created a an impressive system to deal with financial crises inherited from previous era, and everyone is calm about how things are going.

More responds to come...

Dear Pep,

We really need to buy these following players; Lavezzi or Aguero for left winger. For the middle we really need Fabregas. The defense is very good but I think we need a new left back. Abidal and Sylvinho aren't doing too well, no one else can replace them for left back. Any defenders in mind? Well off that topic the goalie has to be Ochoa to give Valdes some competition.

PS:. We need these players really bad.

Sincerely,
B. Beltrocco

u were mistaken ramzi.. many people actually agree with u here... u were saying everyone wud be furious..
anyways the main dilemma our buyers will face is:
do we wrest fab out from arsenal even if it costs us a lot?
OR
we wait for 2-3 yrs for a possible free transfer?
Their main fear is going to be US the fans... if it so happnes that we wait.. AND fab joins RM then we will prolly raise hell and much more... the press will release statements like.. "Barca lose FAB to rivals RM" "A golden opportunity lost..." etc.. Imagine what that will do to the popularity of Laporta and co... with the barca fans always so demanding..
On the other hand, if we buy him now, we break our bank and also disturb the balance of the current team.. but Laporta will have made a MAJOR signing which will ensure his popularity for aeons to come...
Tough decision dont u think? i dont pity Laporta and co. at all...

First of all a great thoughtfull discussion, thanks Pep. about the financial statue however, it's totally normal to see debt in the liability side of the Balance Sheet in any business. the equation is read: (Assets = Liabilities + Owner's Equity) Liabilities normally consist of long and short run debt such as players salaries and parts of the transfers fees that weren't paid in cash, while the owner's equity section provides information about the income(net profit) and the original invested capital of the owners of the business and the stockholders shares in the capital. Assets equals these two sections and it includes the investment in which the club puts its money to generates profit and its cash value and the things the business owns and can sell to generate money when needed (like the stadium and such), so when you see the two sides equal there's no need to worry because if debt is 1000000 + owner's equity is another 1000000 = all equal assets 2000000. the aforementioned report notice that some clubs don't have enough assets to pay its debt, and these are the ones that needs to worry cause if they didn't act quickly enough when the debt date is due even when they sell all of what the business owns they won't be able to pay their debt; so they are technically bankrupt, but till now they are still functioning. maybe they will sell players or the stadium like Borussia Dortmund in Germany or use other methods to delay the payment date or such. I hope I was able to help.

Adding to the financial discussion:

1. The report was written by an Espanyol guy.

2. About the debt being "0": that's the bank debt. Laporta yesterday confirmed that they paid back last year the last part of the 92,5 million euro bank debt the club had.

Another excellent article Ramzi, well done mate! I agree with most you've sad but I think Laporta is intelligent person and he loves Barca so I doubt he'll make a move like that. About Cecs, if he really loves Barca after all, he'll simply wait until his contract ends and then join us. Looking forward for your next articles Ramzi!

you're all quite welcome. it does not even equal 1/10 of the effort put into the article. now I don't need to even think about Cesc possible transfer complexities as the article dissect every side of the move from be it financial, tactical, dressing room issues or morale effect. now if you just have a blog on every aspect of the daily life I would give my brain a so much undeserved rest of the very little thinking it has to perform every now and then. long live your brain cells.

you never know ramzi, if he wants to leave like henry did the price may go down. I think cesc wants to win trophies and arsenal seem to be in a constant rebuilding mode right now. If he were to ask wenger to return to spain, we may be able to get a lower price. Also i was thinking maybe of a swap deal, although i think yaya would be out of the question and keita provides some good arial strength for barca and henry is playing well so why ship him out now. Btw will you be looking at possible signings of ribery, aguero and benzema also? Cheers mate.

lets not forget that recntly he was made captain of Arsenal. for him to leave Arsenal after they have made him everything would be a little too ungrateful, and i dont think he has that sort of mentality.Cesc will probably not be transferred anywhere in the next 5 years so i think worrying about Real Mad-Rid snapping him up is useless.

I think the above comment express the value of the poster.
And even though Only people with self respect and dignity welcomed here, sometimes its also good to keep such kind of pathetic responds to feel grateful we've been raised well, unlike some.
To come to a blog, and spend time just to write a comment of that level, I am not sure if I have to criticize you or pity you, I just hope you soon find yourself a life, so you get settled and more satisfied, because its obvious u lack a lot, and may be some luck in the first place?
I have no problem with difference in opinions, some read my posts some skip it, some scan it fast and some comment on the title - Topic- without reading the text , and some criticize even without reading but in a respectful manner, all that I welcome with pleasure, but you...you really make me sad for how hard it is on some people.
I know I cant understand you because I am not in your position nor your situation, so I just Wish you the best, "The best" is something you need to seek, not to curse the world because you lack.

kamikaze kontiki said...

I think Pep should clear that comment anyway, Ramzi. It would be a bad example to others with regard to what is allowed here. And its just too stupid and an eyesore on a page where a discussion is likely to continue for some time to come.

Anyway, u are right. Although I initially would have like Kun/Arshavin and Zhirkov for left back this winter I don't think either are necessary anymore. With the return of Iniesta I really don't see the need for any more players to cover that left fwd position. But during the summer a left back would be the priority for me followed by a goalkeeper. I favour a buy in the summer coz the team doesn't need any meddling right now while after we win the TREBLE a few changes will be necessary to retain the freshness n add a new approach. I think this is still a team in transition and Pep is still working out where n how to make it more stable. The formation seems slightly unsymmetrical right now - strong in attack on the right, strong in defense on the left n a 3 centre-back system (discounting the marauding Alves) which has been phased out by most teams. It seems to leave a spare man in defense. So, i think Guardiola will make some changes to improve stability n cut-out excess during the summer but for now the eccentricity of the formation is an important factor in the success n has important lessons for the future.

I know it sounds boring but one must not waste a chance to save a miserable soul, even on a football blog, Its more touching to know about a damaged soul than an injured body, even for "A MAN" as requested.
