Four Barcelona players in FIFA top ten

Cristiano Ronaldo has been chosen as FIFA World Player of 2008. Barcelona player Lionel Messi finished second, while Xavi (5th), Eto'o (7th) and Iniesta (9th) are also among the ten highest ranked players in the world.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo 935
2. Lionel Messi 678
3. Fernando Torres 203
4. Kaká 183
5. Xavi 155
6. Steven Gerrard 68
7. Samuel Eto'o 58
8. Iker Casillas 49
9. Andrés Iniesta 37
10. David Villa 37

Ronaldo was chosen after a poll in which the coaches and captains of national teams from around the world have cast their votes on the basis of a list of candidates drawn up by FIFA (read more
here).

Lionel Messi also finished second last year, behind Kaká. Previous Barcelona winners include Romário (1994), Ronaldo (1996 and 1997), Rivaldo (1999) and Ronaldinho (2004 and 2005).

Don't you worry Messi this year is gonna be your year and you will win it all =] His stats are sick! Eto'o will have a tough fight with him to win the golden boots for Europe :P Visca El Barca!

4 Barca players to 1 Madrid. If there is one player on that list from Madrid next year it will be rigged. Anyway I think it's very important that we renew Eto'o. Benzema should not be our obsession. We have attacking options. Kun and Ribery + a left sided defender and back up goal keeper are more important. I like Benzema but we need to improve on areas that will give us more balance and options in case of injury. I didn't realise how short Messi and Xavi are compared to the others. It's 38c here in Melbourne at the moment! HOT, HOT, HOT!!!

Thanks for the links pep.

With all the "Captains" Voting mess in that list, no wonder most of the nations cannot make it in this game, Including mine;)

C.Ronaldo deserved to take the first place based on season 2008 (which is 2007-2008 on the calendar).

This is a good motivation for Messi to keep improving, the more time it take to earn the individual awards, the better it turn for a player. Or thats what I noticed at least.

This is the offical list and I don't think you'll find that anywhere else. So just stop with your terrorist activities and then you'll be able to watch it. You can't have it all...

Kaká... I wonder why this obsession with him persists.

In what way was his 2008 better than Xavi's? Gerrard's? Casillias?

Come on...

Xavi should have been much higher. After all he was the best player in the Euro which was the only international competition last year. Christiano Ronaldo doesn't deserve anything least of all to even be on the list. He runs like there is something stuck up his ass, covers more of the pitch with his rolling than with his running and his dribbling consists of doing 10 useless stepovers and then running into the defender with the ball and fortuitously coming away with it.

I think R7 deserves it. He won so much last year. He wasnt just part ofthe team, but the driver of the team. 42goals, fluke, luck, hardwork, woteva it was, 42 goals aint easy

The Fifa world player of the year is for the calendery 2008 (last half season, summer and half this season).
The Baloon Dór is for the season 07/08.

But however i think ronaldo deserves the price, becuase of the important titels (CL+PL).

I put attention that 6 of the top tens are playiny nowdays in primera division in Spain. It is a honor for the league.

But the most important is that barca will win titels not the players (even if it is funny for them).
The team is always above the individuell players, in all matters.

What the hell kaka is doint on the list???

pep, any chance of a continent-wise break up of the vote. Just to get an idea of the regional bias. My theory is that the Man. Utd marketing machine would have had some influence on the vote.

Oh My God Maradona , voted for Cristiano. He didn't give Messi even a 2nd or 3rd choice vote. And right under him Armenian coach jan Poulsen voted 1st Xavi, 2nd Iniesta, 3rd Messi.
Also Carlos Queiroz : Xavi, Kaka, Ibrahimovic.

Thanks for the links, pep

A manager from the same country as the player is not able to choose him. So Maradona couldn´t choose messi.

Thanks anony,

:) I ll give it a shot

Kami..... I hope you know that CR7 was the first ever EPL player to win the FIFA World Player of the Year award. The majority were either from Serie A o de La Liga. I don't see any bias there.

CR7 deserved the plaudits because of his 42 goals and all of the stuff he won in that same year. I still hate him.

I can't see him winning those awards again because he is a prick and Messi is dominating everything right now.

well if u hate him wouldn't it be appropriate to display a little more mal-intentioned prejudice ?

just kidding
i ll get to work on that pep
