Quote of the day: Maradona

I think Messi's best position is where he plays at Barça, on the right wing, waiting for the ball and then cutting inside.

Diego Maradona, Argentina national team coach

i agree with the legend, messi wants space to be able to move better.he should not play in the center or upfront . he is messi having him on the field is enough though i dont mind even if he plays cb he will pass all 11 and score....

You should write something about rijkaard in ex-barca category as it seems he's a candidate for chelsea's new manager next season..

Abidal has joked in an interview that Barca would probably put him on the street would he injure Messi, haha. Would be interesting to see Abidal try and mark Messi though.

As for the Rijkaard case, isnt there more speculation about him taking over at AC Milan? I thought that his compatriot Guus Hiddink is about to put his pen on paper to sign a contract until the end of the season with Chelsea.
Rijkaard with AC Milan is quite bold though; reuniting him with Ronnie doesnt seem likely to work now, would it?

Humberto, you have three strong arguments:

First, from a footballing perspective, point to Barca's dedication to beautiful, fluid, attacking football. This footballing philosophy was instituted formally under Cruyff when he managed the team from 1988-1996, and has been maintained since that time. You should also mention the cantera system and our dedication to raising strong youth talent and promoting them to the first team (Messi, Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta, Bojan, Busquets, etc.).

Second, from a political perspective, you can always point to Franco's ties to Real Madrid. Madrid, during Franco's rule, was essentially the symbol of Fascism within the footballing world. Barcelona, on the other hand, was viewed as the symbol of liberal democracy within Spain during this period.

Third, from a philanthropic perspective, point to Barcelona's involvement in programs such as Mes and similar involvement in children's aid programs in Africa. Similarly, while most teams accept large payments from advertisers to sport their company name on the team's jersey, Barcelona donates money to UNICEF, the UN's children foundation, each year and wear their name on our jersey instead of selling it as advertising space.

Personally, those are the strongest arguments I see for trying to convince the footballing neutral to be a Barcelona fan. Another argument is that the club is owned by the club members, rather than billionaires as are English clubs, and club members vote in club elections. However, Real Madrid is run in the same way, so this argument really only serves to distinguish us from teams other than Madrid.

Hope that helped, and good luck.

I'm certainly a Culé too, but the thing is, the political argument in favor of Barça is pretty much all media hype. In Catalunya now, Barça represents (and has pretty much always represented) the establishment, the anti-immigrant Catholic old guard. Just because you're anti-fascist doesn't make you liberal.

Pep, I read about Beckenbauer prefers to sell Franck Ribery to Barça than to RM and Ribery said himself that Barça project attracts him. And he had a history of cutting contracts if he's not comfortable (relating to not be able to get any trophy especially in CL, and of course Barça is the place where he thinks he can achieve his ambitions)like he did with Galatasaray in 2005. Check Sport.es.
