Song of the day: Viva La Vida

The song "Viva la Vida" by British rock band Coldplay, one of the favourite bands of Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola, was played several times in the stadium yesterday, both during the warming-up and at half-time. Xavi confirmed today at a press conference that the song has become kind of the lucky song of the team.

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
Once you go there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become

Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

Don't really like Coldplay. And this song is a shameless rip-off from a Joe Satriani song.

seems more like the song of real. look at the lyrics.

i think our song should be harder better faster stronger.

Song of the Day , Pep ???
thats a new one :)

Dont like Coldplay either. And you are right Jr, Coldplay even brazenly admit that they rip off songs from other groups. Gay band.

kamikaze, could you maybe do me a favour and reconsider your use of the word gay please? I mean, Chris Martin is married to one of the most beautiful women in the world, so I don't know what "gay" has to do with them. Yes, they are not a good band, but I object to the use of the word "gay" as a negative term. But you are right, they are terrible. ;)

P.S. Satriani was reported as being shocked when he heard the Coldplay song.

You are right anony, I should stop using gay as a derogatory reference. Dont ask me how but the term popped into my head while I was somehow trying to establish a connection between my personal disapproval and what I have heard about the majority of their fans being female, something which is unusual for any music group that is not a boy/girl band.

Coz this song is Xavi's favorite

Coldplay is the best!!

I for one love coldplay and viva la vida. Rip off or not. Kanye west "samples" 3/4 of his beats so a band using a beat does not bother me

According to wikipedia, two different artists claimed copyright enfringements for viva la vida. LOL. Now how can two seperate artists be claiming that coldplay ripped both of them off? In any case coldplay have denied both sets of accusations and one of the artists retracted the accusations. Joe Satriani's case is still to be heard in court

I've kinda been educated in the musical field. The cord progressions are both the same, except Satriani's song is in a different key.

However, the cord progression is fairly common very easy to make but very inflexible to work with. Moreso, the foreground notes (the most noticeable part of the song which is usually the singer saying the lyrics) of that small section of Satriani's song and of the verses of Viva la Vida because of the jumpy percussion (background).

Looking at the case in one perspective, Chris Martin probably heard Joe's song someday while going along with life without knowing the name (drugged up probably <_<). While trying to create Viva la Vida, Satriani's small part probably stuck unconsciously in Chris's head, not knowing that he actually copied part of the song. This reasoning can be applied because professional composers have extreme memory music-wise; Chris Martin is no exception.

Another way to see things: There are only a limited number of songs that can be composed with the instruments they both use, so it could easily be a case of an overlapping of brainwaves, which is not impossible.

I'm just giving you guys something to read about before forming an uneducated, emotional opinion.

Forgot to add this, but Viva la Vida has the same tune as only a small portion of Satriani's song (20 seconds). The rest is all different.

I do hope that they both will release a single together (look at Santana and the alleged scandal of one of his songs).

blah blah blah...

this futbol not anything music.

wtf does futbol players know about music. seriously.

i dj/produce/and have my own label.

good song - bad song - who cares. everyone has opinion.

There is a reason why Satriani will be in the hall of fame and live on forever..and coldplay will be another pop band gone over night like dust in the wind.

If you going to do anything be original!

This just reminds me of what Vanilla Ice said about ripping Queens song off! *Pathetic* Look where Mr. Rip Van Winkle is now. Lol.

Time will always tell.

If it helps Barca win treble....i dont care if they run around the pitch naked before matches!

I thought Ramen's comment was interesting. But I am not sure I understand the basic point. Are you saying the chord progressions are similar for only a small section of the song? If it is the same chord progression played in a different key for the whole song then it obviously is a rip-off, right?

for all you doubters (and others as well) I recommend you take a look at this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEGGFJLpbu4&feature=related

I'm a guitar player myself, and I couldn't have explained it better than this guy. If you don't know anything about music theory it'll probably be a little over your head though.
